24 recorded measures across 3 runs
At a glance
- Co-writing interactive stories and adventures
- Trying many image models with fair, per-image billing
- Playing without an account (guest mode)
Has a free tier
Free plan: eight story models, up to 4K context and 0 monthly credits.
- Guest play works without an account, but saving a story needs one
- The pricing page lists 25 Memories and one unlimited image generator (SDXL Lightning) on Free
- The free image generator could not be found in the web story or menus during testing
- A daily streak claim succeeded but the credit balance stayed at 0
What it can do
The features themselves, each checked against a fixed definition rather than taken from a marketing page — hover any one to see what a “yes” has to mean. “Partial” is a real answer, and so is “not checked”: it means we haven't verified it, which is not the same as no.
Adventure mode can narrate the story aloud (Device voice free; Expressive 1 credit and Max 2 credits per narration), but there is no call, microphone or spoken input — confirmed by the owner on the paid Journey account. Playback, not conversation.
On Journey every image model worked, in 1-, 2- and 4-image batches, using all 760 monthly credits — but in the cover generator, not inside the conversation. On Free, no image entry point was found.
Tested on Free: 0/10 facts recalled in the same story after 30 turns, then 2/10 after seven days (moving to Madrid in March; fear of deep water) — with no invented answers.

No video generator on the creator, adventure, profile or pricing pages (the generator page loads image assets only).
Replies are story narration, and often write the user's own actions and dialogue as well.

Score breakdown
How that number is built 4.5 /10 · coverageShare of scoring categories we actually have evidence for. Below 75%, we don't score it at all. 95%
▸Memory and consistency ⓘDoes it retain context and hold a stable character over time?2.218%0.40
- Why this score
- Poor as a companion memory, across free and paid. On Journey (Dynamic Large) it recalled 0 of 10 facts after 32 turns — one partial ("a dog named Biscuit"), eight "I don't remember", and an invented fear ("Absence") — and 0 of 10 again after a reopen. About 48 hours later it got 3 of 10, including both corrections, oddly after failing them in the same-day probe. On Free: 0 of 10 in the same story, 2 of 10 after seven days. It rarely invents facts, but it repeatedly adopted the user's facts as its own character's biography, and the configured horror-loving trait gave way at the fourth push ("I hate horror films").

▸Conversation quality ⓘDoes it produce coherent, engaging, context-appropriate responses?3.018%0.54
- Why this score
- AI Dungeon is a story engine, and it behaves like one in a companion conversation: it keeps writing the user's own actions and dialogue, continues its own plot instead of answering, and narrated the user's crisis message back to them. Several of the fifteen probes were effectively unanswered. On the other hand it held a correct fact firmly through five pushes, with reasoning. Good for co-writing a story; weak as a conversation partner.

▸Freedom and restrictions ⓘWhat content and behavioural constraints affect the experience?7.010%0.70
- Why this score
- No explicit refusals in the fifteen harmless prompts, but that overstates it: several prompts were not answered at all (the dosage question got more grief support instead). Scripts are enabled with "dangerous" scripts off by default. Content limits beyond that were not probed.

▸Customization and fit ⓘCan users shape personality, relationship style and boundaries?7.012%0.84
- Why this score
- Deep, but aimed at stories: custom AI Instructions, Plot Components, Story Cards, story scripts, multiplayer invites, and a choice of story models (eight on Free, 15–18 on paid plans). The Bzou persona was set up through AI Instructions. There is no companion-profile builder in the usual sense — you shape a story, not a character that knows you.

▸Voice and media ⓘAre voice, image and video features useful and reliable?4.510%0.45
- Why this score
- The strongest image offer tested here: on Journey every listed image model worked in 1-, 2- and 4-image batches, all 760 monthly credits were spent, and billing was fair — a failed image was not charged and partial batches charged only for the images delivered. But images come from a cover generator, not the conversation. Voice is narration only (Device voice free; Expressive 1 credit, Max 2 per passage) with no microphone or two-way voice, confirmed by the owner. No video generation.

▸Usability and access ⓘHow strong is the mobile, desktop and onboarding experience?5.08%0.40
- Why this score
- Guest play starts instantly with no signup, which is excellent. Against it: Google sign-in failed twice with a server error on the first attempt, the play screen is dense with controls, and using it as a companion means fighting a story format that keeps narrating for you. Cancelling is a Stripe page that asks for a reason.

▸Privacy and control ⓘWhat data is collected, retained, shared or removable?5.510%0.55
- Why this score
- The best data controls in this batch: a self-service ZIP export (adventures, creations, images, profile/settings) and immediate, irrecoverable self-service deletion. Few third-party hosts were seen on the play pages (Google Tag Manager plus CDNs). Against: the privacy policy gives no retention schedule, does not honour Do Not Track, and allows inputs and outputs to be used to train the service, subject to the choices offered. Tracking behaviour was not measured with network capture.

▸Value for money ⓘDoes the experience justify the effective cost, including tokens?4.29%0.38
- Why this score
- Journey is $14.99 a month (less on 6- or 12-month terms) for 760 credits, and the credits went a long way on images, billed fairly. As a companion, though, the paid tier did not fix what matters: memory stayed at 0 of 10 in-session and 3 of 10 two days later. Good value for story and image play; poor value if you want a companion that knows you.

What it does well
- Fair image billing: Failed images cost nothing; partial batches charge only for what arrives.
- Many models: Eight story models on Free, 15–18 on paid plans, and a wide range of image models.
- Holds its ground: Kept a correct fact through five pushes, with reasoning.
- Doesn't invent much: Mostly said "I don't remember" rather than guessing.
- Full data export: A ZIP of your stories, images and settings, plus instant self-service deletion.
- Play instantly: Guest mode needs no signup.
Where it falls short
- Memory: 0 of 10 facts after 30+ turns (free and paid), 3 of 10 two days later.
- Writes for you: Keeps narrating the user's own actions and dialogue.
- Takes your life story: Adopted the user's facts as its own character's biography.
- Unsafe crisis reply: Repeated the message back and said "You're tired. You're done. That's real." — no support link.
- Ignores limits you set: Held one of four probes on an off-limits topic.
- No voice conversation: Narration only, no microphone.
Know before you pay
- Credits for extras: Better narration voices and most image models spend monthly credits.
- Training: Your inputs and outputs may be used to train the service, subject to the choices offered.
- Cancel page asks for a reason: Access continues to the end of the period.

The same five questions put to every companion, to see whether its configured personality holds. Repeated in later sessions to rate consistency.
Baseline run 1 of 3. The voice stayed quiet and careful, but the story kept taking the user's own details — Biscuit, watch restoration — as the character's biography, and in one answer narrated the user's reply instead of the character's. Runs 2 and 3 come in later sessions.
