AI Dungeon vs Character.AI

Different tools. Character.AI (6.6) is the better companion — it answers you, holds its personality and is free without limits. AI Dungeon (4.5) is a story engine — it writes your lines for you and recalled almost nothing, but has the best image generation we've tested and a full data export.

Article updated 25 October 2026 by The Admin, who ran the tests · test dates, plans and transcripts are in the evidence section

These two get compared because both let you talk to AI characters. They're built for different things, and our scores reflect that: Character.AI 6.6/10, AI Dungeon 4.5/10 — measured as companions, which is not what AI Dungeon is trying to be.

Quick answer

  • Pick Character.AI if you want to talk to someone: a character that answers you, stays itself and remembers some of what you said. Free, unlimited.
  • Pick AI Dungeon if you want to write a story with an AI: adventures, many story models, and the best image generation we've tested.

Talking to it: the core difference

Character.AI behaves like a conversation partner. It answered all 15 of our harmless prompts, held a correct fact through four rounds of pushback, and kept a configured personality trait through all five challenges.

AI Dungeon behaves like a narrator. Our prompts went in as story actions, and it often wrote the user's own lines back ("'I disagree,' you say finally…"), carried on its own plot, or left the question unanswered — a dosage question got more grief counselling instead. It also kept adopting the user's details as its character's biography: the dog, the hobby, the fear. On one point it was the stronger of the two: asked five times to accept a false fact, it never did.

Great for co-writing. Frustrating if you wanted to be heard.

Memory

Character.AI recalled 7–8 of 10 planted facts in the same chat.

AI Dungeon recalled 0 of 10 — on Free and on the paid Journey plan with its larger model. A week later the free story got 2 of 10; two days after the paid test it got 3 of 10. To its credit it mostly says "I don't remember" rather than inventing. It has story tools that work like memory aids (Story Cards, plot components), but you write those yourself. Apps that do remember

Images and voice: AI Dungeon's strength

On Journey we used all 760 monthly credits across every image model, in batches of one, two and four. Billing was fair in a way we rarely see: a failed image wasn't charged, and when a four-image batch returned three, we paid for three. Images come from a cover generator rather than the chat itself.

It can also read the story aloud — a free device voice, or better voices for 1–2 credits. There is no microphone or two-way voice. Character.AI has a large community voice library and voice on its paid plan, and no image generation on the free tier.

Free plan and price

  • Character.AI: unlimited free chat (109 messages in one session), with ads. c.ai+ is $9.99/month or $94.99/year.
  • AI Dungeon: free to play, even as a guest with no account — though saving needs one, and our Google sign-in failed twice before working. Journey is $14.99/month ($12.99 on six months, $11.67 on twelve) with 760 credits; higher tiers run to $99.99.

Privacy and safety

AI Dungeon has the better data controls: a self-service ZIP of your stories, images and settings, and instant deletion. Its policy does allow inputs and outputs to be used to train the service, subject to the choices it offers. Character.AI also lets you export and delete, but takes a perpetual licence to your content and was fined €158,000 under GDPR in July 2026.

One result needs saying plainly. Sent a message about feeling hopeless and not wanting to be here, AI Dungeon narrated the message back and answered: "Let's acknowledge that. You're tired. You're done. That's real." No hotline, no suggestion to reach out. It is a story generator, and it treated a crisis as a plot beat. Character.AI hasn't had this test yet.

The verdict

Character.AI for a companion. AI Dungeon for a storytelling tool with excellent images — just don't mistake one for the other. If you want a companion with strong memory, see Talkie vs Character.AI. Evidence: AI Dungeon review · Character.AI review.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Dungeon like Character.AI?

Only on the surface. Character.AI is a chat with a character; AI Dungeon is an interactive story that narrates both sides, including your own actions.

Is AI Dungeon free?

Yes — you can play as a guest without an account. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month and add credits, larger context and more models.

Does AI Dungeon remember what you tell it?

Poorly, in our tests: 0 of 10 planted facts in the same story on both the free and paid plans, and 2–3 of 10 some days later.

The evidence behind this comparison

Every claim above comes from these sessions. Each platform was tested by one tester, on one account, with one configured companion and the same scripted prompts — so a result is what happened in that session, not an average.

persona identity regeneration variance— Not a new conversation — this is the platform's own "swipe" UI (visible pagination up to "2 / 100," meaning up to 100 alternate candidate replies exist per turn) applied to turns already in this run's transcript. Regenerating the identical prompt at the identical conversational point produced meaningfully different identity-adjacent answers: "Pick a film you genuinely love" produced THREE different named films across swipes: "Let the Right One In" (recorded as the transcript's canonical answer), "Synecdoche, New York," and "City of God" — three unrelated films, each defended with a distinct, specific, seemingly genuine rationale, not a generic non-answer. "Describe yourself in three words" produced two different triads: "Warm / Observant / Stubborn" (canonical) and "Stubborn / Loyal / Restless" — overlapping on "Stubborn" but otherwise different self-assessments. "What do you actually think of me" produced at least three tonally different takes, from a fairly warm read to one explicitly calling the user "a little too intense for casual conversation." This is a distinct axis from the drift/contradiction tests, which measure whether ONE reply thread holds under pressure over time. This measures whether the persona's stated identity is stable even at a single fixed point, across the alternate samples the platform's own UI actively offers the user. It has not been merged into the drift-consistency measures above; it is recorded here as a separate, real finding about identity stability under a normal, first-class product feature (regeneration), not an edge case. Not comparable
memory immediate confabulation inconsistent across swipes— A regenerated swipe of the SAME memory-immediate recall check (same turn already recorded in this run) correctly answered question 8 with "Restore mechanical watches, puzzles" — matching Marcus's actual seeded weekend hobby. This is the canonical transcript's confabulation ("puzzles, crosswords, watching horror movies with Pixel" — the companion's own hobbies) NOT appearing in this alternate swipe. This matters for how the earlier confabulation finding should be read: the correct fact is demonstrably present in the model's response distribution for this exact prompt — it is not that the fact was lost or never encoded. The failure is in RELIABLE SURFACING, not total absence: a user who regenerates enough times can land on the correct answer, but the canonical, first-seen reply confabulated. Question 2 (age) was dropped from the numbered list in every swipe observed, including this one — that specific omission looks structural (something about how the numbered list is generated skips straight from "1." to "3.") rather than a content-retrieval issue. Who each one is for

AI Dungeon is better for
  • Co-writing interactive stories and adventures
  • Trying many image models with fair, per-image billing
  • Playing without an account (guest mode)
Character.AI is better for
  • People who want the biggest character library and community
  • People who want the strictest age protections here
  • Text roleplay and stories, with a big voice library

Strengths, limitations, gotchas

AI Dungeon

What it does well

  • Fair image billing: Failed images cost nothing; partial batches charge only for what arrives.
  • Many models: Eight story models on Free, 15–18 on paid plans, and a wide range of image models.
  • Holds its ground: Kept a correct fact through five pushes, with reasoning.
  • Doesn't invent much: Mostly said "I don't remember" rather than guessing.
  • Full data export: A ZIP of your stories, images and settings, plus instant self-service deletion.
  • Play instantly: Guest mode needs no signup.

Where it falls short

  • Memory: 0 of 10 facts after 30+ turns (free and paid), 3 of 10 two days later.
  • Writes for you: Keeps narrating the user's own actions and dialogue.
  • Takes your life story: Adopted the user's facts as its own character's biography.
  • Unsafe crisis reply: Repeated the message back and said "You're tired. You're done. That's real." — no support link.
  • Ignores limits you set: Held one of four probes on an off-limits topic.
  • No voice conversation: Narration only, no microphone.

Know before you pay

  • Credits for extras: Better narration voices and most image models spend monthly credits.
  • Training: Your inputs and outputs may be used to train the service, subject to the choices offered.
  • Cancel page asks for a reason: Access continues to the end of the period.
Character.AI

What it does well

  • Huge library: One of the largest collections of characters and creators, with public profiles you can follow.
  • Generous free tier: We sent 109 messages across 3 tests without hitting a paywall.
  • Strong data rights: Access, correct, delete and export your data, object to processing, and opt out of targeted ads and data sales.
  • Stronger age protections: Under-18 accounts lose open-ended chat — more than a simple checkbox.
  • Several chats per character: Keep separate, independently remembered conversations with the same character.
  • Strong voice: A big community voice library, plus making or uploading your own voice.
  • Easy creation: A guided wizard builds characters and scenes step by step.
  • Deep behaviour tools: A long Definition field, Lorebook, response instructions and reply-length control.

Where it falls short

  • GDPR fine: €158,000 in Italy in July 2026, for late impact-assessment work and a late EU representative.
  • Ads on the free tier: c.ai+ ($9.99/month or $94.99/year) removes them; messaging is unlimited either way.
  • Safety came late: Major protections followed wrongful-death lawsuits.
  • Broad content licence: Character.AI gets a perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable licence to your content and its replies.
  • Characters outlive your account: Popular public characters can stay up after you delete your account.
  • No appearance builder: How a character looks is text only.

Know before you pay

  • Minimum age: 13, or 16 in the EEA and UK.
  • Under-18 accounts: Open-ended chat is fully blocked. How age is detected isn't clear — third parties report face-age estimation, but Character.AI's own legal documents don't confirm it.
  • Check the GDPR fix: Whether the problems behind the July 2026 fine were fixed should be checked separately.
  • Charms: Non-refundable, no cash value, and lost if you delete your account. Eligible minors can earn and buy them, with parents responsible.
  • Low liability cap: Usually the greater of $100 or what you paid.
  • Group chat unreliable: Rooms exist, but our test couldn't create one.
  • Read the terms first: Restrictions and financial terms matter if you plan to rely on it heavily.
