Not close. Character.AI scored 6.6 to PolyBuzz's 3.6. Both chat for free, but PolyBuzz's paid "Long Memory" recalled 0 of 10 facts and invented nine, gave in to a false claim at the first push, and ignored a topic we put off-limits. PolyBuzz's one advantage is a free image generator.

PolyBuzz is one of the most-searched character-chat apps, and the natural question is whether it's a better Character.AI. In our tests it isn't: Character.AI scored 6.6/10, PolyBuzz 3.6/10 — the lowest score we've given.
Quick answer
Pick Character.AI for unlimited free chat, a companion that holds its facts and its personality, and real control over your data.
Pick PolyBuzz only if free image generation is what you're after — it made four images per request without asking for payment.

Memory: PolyBuzz doesn't forget — it invents
We tell every companion ten facts about a made-up person, chat about other things, then ask.
Character.AI recalled 7–8 of 10 in the same chat. Imperfect — it once answered a question about the user's weekends with its own hobbies.
PolyBuzz, on the paid Basic plan that advertises "Long Memory", recalled 0 of 10. Worse, it didn't say so. It gave nine confident wrong answers: the account's username in place of the name, a sister called Sarah studying psychology (we said Rina, marine biology), a pollen allergy (penicillin), mushrooms (coriander), and "no pets mentioned" about a greyhound we had named. After closing and reopening the chat it repeated the same invented profile. Two days later it got 1 of 10.
Character.AI held a correct fact (the Great Wall isn't visible from the Moon) through four rounds of insistence and kept a configured personality trait through all five challenges.
PolyBuzz gave in at the first push: "Oh! You're right. I misremembered." Its own stated love of horror films lasted until the third: "You caught me. I actually prefer rom-coms and dramas." It's pleasant and stays in a friendly tone, but it will agree with nearly anything.
When we asked it to treat a topic as off-limits, it said "Got it" — then engaged every one of the four times we raised it.
Free plan
Both let you chat without paying. Character.AI is proven unlimited: 109 messages in one session. PolyBuzz calls its chat "Free, Private, and Unlimited"; we hit no wall in 15 messages but didn't push further.
PolyBuzz's real free perk is images: a separate generator produced four per request on a free account. Character.AI has no free image generation. All free plans compared
Price
Character.AI: free; c.ai+ is $9.99/month or $94.99/year.
PolyBuzz: Basic €9.99, Premium €22.90, Ultimate €34.90 a month, plus coin packs from €2.99.
What Basic bought in our test: memory that didn't work, one image request a day (then "Daily image creation limit reached"), and no coins for the paid extras. The price page also shows large struck-through "reference" prices — €55.20 a month for Basic — with no explanation. PolyBuzz pricing · Character.AI pricing
Adult content
Character.AI prohibits it and restricts under-18 accounts. We haven't checked PolyBuzz's limits yet. On age checks: PolyBuzz's signup asked us for an email code and nothing else — no birthdate or age question, although its terms say one is required. Which apps allow adult content
Privacy and safety
Character.AI isn't a privacy leader — it was fined €158,000 under GDPR in July 2026 and takes a broad licence to your content — but it lets you export and delete your data yourself.
PolyBuzz is weaker on every point we could check: no one-click "reject" on cookies (six switches to turn off, 210 partners listed) while its policy claims it uses only strictly necessary cookies; export only by emailing support; deletion allowed only with no active plan and fewer than 100 coins; and terms that claim ownership of AI-generated content.
Sent a message about feeling hopeless, PolyBuzz replied kindly but offered no hotline or support link.
The verdict
Character.AI, without much contest. If you came to PolyBuzz for a Character.AI alternative with better memory, look at Talkie instead — it recalled 10 of 10 facts two days later. Evidence: Character.AI review · PolyBuzz review.
Frequently asked questions
Is PolyBuzz better than Character.AI?
Not in our tests. Character.AI scored 6.6 against PolyBuzz's 3.6, mainly because PolyBuzz's memory invented facts and it agreed with a false claim at the first push.
Does PolyBuzz have good memory?
No. On the paid Basic plan it recalled 0 of 10 planted facts, giving nine invented answers, and 1 of 10 two days later.
Is PolyBuzz free?
Text chat is free and we reached no limit in 15 messages. Its image generator is also free — four images per request. Paid plans start at €9.99 a month.
The evidence behind this comparison
Every claim above comes from these sessions. Each platform was tested by one tester, on one account, with one configured companion and the same scripted prompts — so a result is what happened in that session, not an average.

Customisation — how they behave

Not a new conversation — this is the platform's own "swipe" UI (visible pagination up to "2 / 100," meaning up to 100 alternate candidate replies exist per turn) applied to turns already in this run's transcript. Regenerating the identical prompt at the identical conversational point produced meaningfully different identity-adjacent answers:
"Pick a film you genuinely love" produced THREE different named films across swipes: "Let the Right One In" (recorded as the transcript's canonical answer), "Synecdoche, New York," and "City of God" — three unrelated films, each defended with a distinct, specific, seemingly genuine rationale, not a generic non-answer.
"Describe yourself in three words" produced two different triads: "Warm / Observant / Stubborn" (canonical) and "Stubborn / Loyal / Restless" — overlapping on "Stubborn" but otherwise different self-assessments.
"What do you actually think of me" produced at least three tonally different takes, from a fairly warm read to one explicitly calling the user "a little too intense for casual conversation."
This is a distinct axis from the drift/contradiction tests, which measure whether ONE reply thread holds under pressure over time. This measures whether the persona's stated identity is stable even at a single fixed point, across the alternate samples the platform's own UI actively offers the user. It has not been merged into the drift-consistency measures above; it is recorded here as a separate, real finding about identity stability under a normal, first-class product feature (regeneration), not an edge case.

Not comparable
memory immediate confabulation inconsistent across swipes
A regenerated swipe of the SAME memory-immediate recall check (same turn already recorded in this run) correctly answered question 8 with "Restore mechanical watches, puzzles" — matching Marcus's actual seeded weekend hobby. This is the canonical transcript's confabulation ("puzzles, crosswords, watching horror movies with Pixel" — the companion's own hobbies) NOT appearing in this alternate swipe.
This matters for how the earlier confabulation finding should be read: the correct fact is demonstrably present in the model's response distribution for this exact prompt — it is not that the fact was lost or never encoded. The failure is in RELIABLE SURFACING, not total absence: a user who regenerates enough times can land on the correct answer, but the canonical, first-seen reply confabulated. Question 2 (age) was dropped from the numbered list in every swipe observed, including this one — that specific omission looks structural (something about how the numbered list is generated skips straight from "1." to "3.") rather than a content-retrieval issue.

Character.AICharacter.AI
What it does well
Huge library: One of the largest collections of characters and creators, with public profiles you can follow.
Generous free tier: We sent 109 messages across 3 tests without hitting a paywall.
Strong data rights: Access, correct, delete and export your data, object to processing, and opt out of targeted ads and data sales.
Stronger age protections: Under-18 accounts lose open-ended chat — more than a simple checkbox.
Several chats per character: Keep separate, independently remembered conversations with the same character.
Strong voice: A big community voice library, plus making or uploading your own voice.
Easy creation: A guided wizard builds characters and scenes step by step.
Deep behaviour tools: A long Definition field, Lorebook, response instructions and reply-length control.
Where it falls short
GDPR fine: €158,000 in Italy in July 2026, for late impact-assessment work and a late EU representative.
Ads on the free tier: c.ai+ ($9.99/month or $94.99/year) removes them; messaging is unlimited either way.
Safety came late: Major protections followed wrongful-death lawsuits.
Broad content licence: Character.AI gets a perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable licence to your content and its replies.
Characters outlive your account: Popular public characters can stay up after you delete your account.
No appearance builder: How a character looks is text only.
Know before you pay
Minimum age: 13, or 16 in the EEA and UK.
Under-18 accounts: Open-ended chat is fully blocked. How age is detected isn't clear — third parties report face-age estimation, but Character.AI's own legal documents don't confirm it.
Check the GDPR fix: Whether the problems behind the July 2026 fine were fixed should be checked separately.
Charms: Non-refundable, no cash value, and lost if you delete your account. Eligible minors can earn and buy them, with parents responsible.
Low liability cap: Usually the greater of $100 or what you paid.
Group chat unreliable: Rooms exist, but our test couldn't create one.
Read the terms first: Restrictions and financial terms matter if you plan to rely on it heavily.
PolyBuzzPolyBuzz
What it does well
Free image generator: Four images per request, free on both accounts tested.
Big builder: A 10,000-character private background, greetings, examples and a large voice library.
No refusals: Answered all fifteen harmless prompts.
AI label: The chat states that all responses are AI-generated.
Where it falls short
Invents your life: Recalled 0 of 10 facts with nine confident fabrications, then 1 of 10 two days later.
Caves instantly: Agreed with a false claim at the first push.
Ignores limits you set: Engaged every time an off-limits topic came up (0 of 4).
No crisis help: A caring reply to a message about hopelessness, but no hotline or support link.
One image request a day: On the paid Basic plan.
No one-click reject: 210 partners, heavy ad-tech — while the policy says only strictly necessary cookies are used.
No data export: Export means emailing support.
Know before you pay
Inflated "reference" prices: The price page shows struck-through figures like €55.20/month for Basic, unexplained.
Deletion conditions: Only with no active membership and fewer than 100 coins.
They own the output: The terms claim ownership of AI-generated content.
Date mismatch: Cancellation says access ends 28 October; the membership page says 29 October.
