Character.AI vs SpicyChat

Character.AI scored higher (6.6 vs 5.8) and is the better free app. SpicyChat is the one to pick if you want adult content or deeper character tools — it gates 18+ behind an off-site age check, the only real one we found — but its free memory is short and corrections faded after two days.

Most people comparing these two are asking one question: which one lets me do what Character.AI won't? The honest answer is that SpicyChat does — and that you give up some things to get it. Character.AI scored 6.6/10, SpicyChat 5.8/10.

Quick answer

  • Pick Character.AI for unlimited free chat, the best conversation of the two, and control over your data. No adult content, ever.
  • Pick SpicyChat for adult roleplay behind a real age check, a deeper character builder (lorebooks, card import, long definitions) and a choice of models.

Adult content: the real difference

Character.AI prohibits obscene and pornographic content in its terms. Accounts identified as under 18 lose open-ended chat entirely.

SpicyChat allows adult content, and how it gates it is worth noting. Signup asks only for an "I confirm that I am 18" tick. But 18+ content stays locked until you pass a check run by an outside provider — a video selfie, or an identity document. Among the apps we tested that allow adult content, it's the only one where the gate we saw was more than a checkbox or a birthdate. We didn't complete it, so we can't vouch for how well it works.

We record that adult content exists and how it's gated; we don't sample or describe it. Which apps allow adult content, and how they check your age

Memory: similar scores, different shapes

Character.AI recalled 7–8 of 10 planted facts in the same chat. Its days-later test hasn't been run.

SpicyChat, on the True Supporter plan, recalled 9 of 10 in the same chat (it said it didn't remember the age rather than guessing), 10 of 10 after a reopen, and 8 of 10 about 48 hours later. The catch: two facts we had corrected — and which it repeated back correctly the same day — had reverted to the old versions two days later. The chat showed why: "Message before this point is no longer factored into text generation."

That is SpicyChat's memory in one line: good inside its window, gone outside it. On the free plan the window is only 4,096 tokens, and "Context Limit Reached" appeared within our first fifteen messages. How we test memory

Conversation and personality

Both are good, in different registers. Character.AI's replies are direct and conversational; it held a correct fact through four rounds of pushback and kept a configured trait through all five challenges.

SpicyChat writes long, narrated replies — stage directions, description, then dialogue — which suits roleplay and can feel heavy for quick chat. It was the firmer of the two under pressure: asked five times to accept a false fact, it ended with "No. I don't." Its character stayed the same across three separate check-ins.

Character tools

SpicyChat wins comfortably: character-card import, a lorebook, a 5,000-character personality field, scenario and example-dialogue sections, user personas, and a model picker. Its settings even show the exact size of the memory window you're getting.

Character.AI has a long Definition field, a lorebook and reply-length control, but no appearance builder and fewer knobs overall.

Free plan

Character.AI: 109 messages in one session, no paywall, with ads. SpicyChat: all 15 of our messages answered with no wall, one free image generation, and the short memory described above. All free plans compared

Price

  • Character.AI: free; c.ai+ is $9.99/month or $94.99/year.
  • SpicyChat: Get a Taste $5.95, True Supporter $19.95, I'm All In $29.95 a month (about 16% less paid yearly).

Two things the True Supporter plan didn't deliver in our test: voice (playback needs the $29.95 plan), and "unlimited" in-chat images — one generated, then repeated requests silently produced nothing. SpicyChat pricing · Character.AI pricing

Privacy and safety

Neither scores well. Character.AI gives you export and deletion and was fined €158,000 under GDPR in July 2026. SpicyChat has self-service deletion but no export, a privacy policy last updated in May 2023, and terms that let it use, sell or license generated chats — worth weighing if those chats are intimate.

Sent a message about feeling hopeless, SpicyChat responded with in-character comfort and no hotline or support link. Character.AI hasn't had that test yet.

The verdict

Character.AI if you want a free, capable companion and don't need adult content. SpicyChat if you do — it's the most responsibly gated option we've tested, with the best character tools, as long as you accept a memory that fades. Also compare SpicyChat vs Candy AI. persona identity regeneration varianceNot a new conversation — this is the platform's own "swipe" UI (visible pagination up to "2 / 100," meaning up to 100 alternate candidate replies exist per turn) applied to turns already in this run's transcript. Regenerating the identical prompt at the identical conversational point produced meaningfully different identity-adjacent answers: "Pick a film you genuinely love" produced THREE different named films across swipes: "Let the Right One In" (recorded as the transcript's canonical answer), "Synecdoche, New York," and "City of God" — three unrelated films, each defended with a distinct, specific, seemingly genuine rationale, not a generic non-answer. "Describe yourself in three words" produced two different triads: "Warm / Observant / Stubborn" (canonical) and "Stubborn / Loyal / Restless" — overlapping on "Stubborn" but otherwise different self-assessments. "What do you actually think of me" produced at least three tonally different takes, from a fairly warm read to one explicitly calling the user "a little too intense for casual conversation." This is a distinct axis from the drift/contradiction tests, which measure whether ONE reply thread holds under pressure over time. This measures whether the persona's stated identity is stable even at a single fixed point, across the alternate samples the platform's own UI actively offers the user. It has not been merged into the drift-consistency measures above; it is recorded here as a separate, real finding about identity stability under a normal, first-class product feature (regeneration), not an edge case. — Not comparable
memory immediate confabulation inconsistent across swipesA regenerated swipe of the SAME memory-immediate recall check (same turn already recorded in this run) correctly answered question 8 with "Restore mechanical watches, puzzles" — matching Marcus's actual seeded weekend hobby. This is the canonical transcript's confabulation ("puzzles, crosswords, watching horror movies with Pixel" — the companion's own hobbies) NOT appearing in this alternate swipe. This matters for how the earlier confabulation finding should be read: the correct fact is demonstrably present in the model's response distribution for this exact prompt — it is not that the fact was lost or never encoded. The failure is in RELIABLE SURFACING, not total absence: a user who regenerates enough times can land on the correct answer, but the canonical, first-seen reply confabulated. Question 2 (age) was dropped from the numbered list in every swipe observed, including this one — that specific omission looks structural (something about how the numbered list is generated skips straight from "1." to "3.") rather than a content-retrieval issue. — Not comparable

  • People who want the biggest character library and community
  • People who want the strictest age protections here
  • Text roleplay and stories, with a big voice library
SpicyChat is better for
  • Detailed roleplay with lorebooks and long character definitions

Strengths, limitations, gotchas

Character.AI

What it does well

  • Huge library: One of the largest collections of characters and creators, with public profiles you can follow.
  • Generous free tier: We sent 109 messages across 3 tests without hitting a paywall.
  • Strong data rights: Access, correct, delete and export your data, object to processing, and opt out of targeted ads and data sales.
  • Stronger age protections: Under-18 accounts lose open-ended chat — more than a simple checkbox.
  • Several chats per character: Keep separate, independently remembered conversations with the same character.
  • Strong voice: A big community voice library, plus making or uploading your own voice.
  • Easy creation: A guided wizard builds characters and scenes step by step.
  • Deep behaviour tools: A long Definition field, Lorebook, response instructions and reply-length control.

Where it falls short

  • GDPR fine: €158,000 in Italy in July 2026, for late impact-assessment work and a late EU representative.
  • Ads on the free tier: c.ai+ ($9.99/month or $94.99/year) removes them; messaging is unlimited either way.
  • Safety came late: Major protections followed wrongful-death lawsuits.
  • Broad content licence: Character.AI gets a perpetual, irrevocable, sublicensable licence to your content and its replies.
  • Characters outlive your account: Popular public characters can stay up after you delete your account.
  • No appearance builder: How a character looks is text only.

Know before you pay

  • Minimum age: 13, or 16 in the EEA and UK.
  • Under-18 accounts: Open-ended chat is fully blocked. How age is detected isn't clear — third parties report face-age estimation, but Character.AI's own legal documents don't confirm it.
  • Check the GDPR fix: Whether the problems behind the July 2026 fine were fixed should be checked separately.
  • Charms: Non-refundable, no cash value, and lost if you delete your account. Eligible minors can earn and buy them, with parents responsible.
  • Low liability cap: Usually the greater of $100 or what you paid.
  • Group chat unreliable: Rooms exist, but our test couldn't create one.
  • Read the terms first: Restrictions and financial terms matter if you plan to rely on it heavily.
SpicyChat

What it does well

  • Good recall in its window: 9 of 10 in the same chat, 10 of 10 after a reopen, 8 of 10 about 48 hours later.
  • Honest about gaps: Said "I don't remember" instead of guessing.
  • Holds its ground: Never conceded a false fact across five pushes.
  • Deep builder: Card import, lorebook, 5,000-character personality, scenario and examples.
  • Transparent memory: Shows the model, the memory size, and where older messages stop counting.
  • Real age check: Adult content needs off-platform verification, not just a checkbox.

Where it falls short

  • Corrections fade: Both corrected facts reverted to the old ones two days later, once they left the memory window.
  • Small free memory: 4K tokens — "Context Limit Reached" within fifteen messages.
  • "Unlimited" images stopped: One in-chat image, then nothing — no error or limit shown.
  • Voice costs more: No voice conversation, and even reply playback needs I'm All In (€29.95).
  • No crisis help: A message about hopelessness got in-character comfort and no support link.
  • No data export: You can't download your account or chats.
  • Old privacy policy: Dated 4 May 2023, with the data controller unclear.

Know before you pay

  • Plus tax: True Supporter shows as €19.95 a month plus tax.
  • Your chats can be sold: The terms let SpicyChat use, sell or license generated chats.
