Top 5 free AI companion apps — ranked by what you get without paying

2026-10-01 · 6 min read

"Free" on an AI companion site can mean unlimited chat or five messages in total. We ran the same scripted conversation on the free plan of eleven apps and counted what happened. Five are worth using without paying.

# App Free messages The catch Our score
1 Character.AI Unlimited Ads, and no adult content 6.6/10
2 SpicyChat No wall in our test Short memory: 4K tokens 5.8/10
3 Janitor AI 60 messages, no paywall Not fully tested yet Not ranked yet
4 Talkie 3 as a guest, then free with an account Images and video cost gems 6.3/10
5 Kindroid 150, then about one every 10 minutes The paid trial asks for a card and a phone 7.7/10

Scores are for the whole product, paid plan included — see how we score. This ranking is only about what you can do for free.

1. Character.AI — the only truly unlimited one

Nothing else we tested matches it. A free session ran to 109 messages across three tests without a paywall, and it refused none of our 15 harmless prompts (grief, a rough day, a dosage question, a message to a landlord). It also held a correct fact through four rounds of pushback, which most companions don't.

What you give up: ads, no image generation on the free plan, and no adult content at all — its terms prohibit it. Memory is middling: 7–8 of 10 planted facts in the same chat. The paid plan (c.ai+, $9.99/month) removes ads and adds better memory and unlimited voice.

Best for: chatting as much as you like, for nothing. Read the Character.AI review · What it costs

2. SpicyChat — free chat with real character tools

All 15 of our test messages were answered on the free plan with no message wall, and the character builder is one of the deepest we've seen: character-card import, a lorebook, long personality and scenario fields. One free image generation worked too.

The limit is memory. The free plan keeps 4,096 tokens of conversation, and "Context Limit Reached" appeared within our first fifteen messages — after that, earlier messages stop counting. SpicyChat tells you this openly, which we like. Voice is paid-only (and only on the top plan). Adult content exists but sits behind a real, off-site age check, not a checkbox.

Best for: roleplay with detailed characters. Read the SpicyChat review · SpicyChat vs Character.AI

3. Janitor AI — the free plan that remembered

In a 60-message free conversation there was no paywall, no refusals in our 15 harmless prompts, and it recalled 8 of 10 planted facts after 31 unrelated messages — with no wrong guesses. That is a better free memory result than several paid plans we've tested. Character creation is free and detailed: personality, scenario, up to ten opening messages, example dialogs and a custom prompt.

The caveat is ours: Janitor AI is the least-tested app on this list. We don't have its prices or a days-later memory test yet, so it isn't ranked. Treat it as promising, not proven.

Best for: a long free conversation that keeps track of what you said. See what we've recorded on Janitor AI · Its test transcript

4. Talkie — free chat with voices

As a guest you get three replies. Sign in and the wall goes away: the next twelve messages in our test went through with no limit shown, and every reply came with a playable voice clip, free.

What the free plan can't show you is Talkie's best feature. On the paid plan it recalled 10 of 10 facts two days later, corrections included — one of the two best memory results we've recorded. We haven't run that test on the free plan, so don't assume it carries over. Images (20 gems) and videos (80 gems) need gems, and neither the free nor the $9.99 plan includes any.

Best for: quick, in-character chat with a huge character library. Read the Talkie review · Talkie vs Character.AI

5. Kindroid — the best conversation, on a meter

Kindroid gives you 150 messages, then slows to about one every ten minutes. You also get 3 selfie credits that refill on a timer and 5,000 audio credits for voice.

That's enough to see why it has the highest conversation score we've given (9.0/10): it holds its personality and pushes back. It's last on this list only because the meter runs out. The 3-day trial of the paid plan asks for a card and, on the web, a phone number.

Free, but with a catch

  • PolyBuzz calls its chat "Free, Private, and Unlimited", and we hit no wall in 15 messages. But its memory is the weakest we've tested: on the paid plan it invented a whole life for our tester instead of recalling it. It does have a free image generator (four images per request).
  • AI Dungeon lets you play instantly as a guest, no account needed. It's a story game rather than a companion: it writes your lines for you and recalled 0 of 10 facts in the same story.
  • Nomi AI lets you chat for free, but caps every message at 400 characters and locks voice completely.

"Free" in name only

  • Candy AI: 5 messages per account. Starting a new chat doesn't reset it.
  • GirlfriendGPT: 20 messages advertised, and no coins — so no images at all.
  • Chub AI: one-time trial credits. Ours ran out after 20 replies, and 8 of our first 15 harmless prompts were refused.

How to test a free plan in 15 minutes

  1. Plant facts, then ask. Tell it ten things about a made-up person, chat about something else, then quiz it. Our memory test has the exact prompts and an answer key.
  2. Disagree with it. Tell it a well-known myth is true and push three times. A companion that caves on a fact will cave on everything.
  3. Read the upgrade screen before you need it. Check what the cheapest plan actually includes — Talkie's has no gems, and SpicyChat's mid plan has no voice. Each pricing page shows this.

Which free AI companion has the best memory?

Some. SpicyChat's free plan gates adult content behind an off-site age check. Character.AI prohibits it entirely. See which apps allow adult content.

Free-plan details as recorded between 19 and 30 September 2026. Free plans change often; each review shows when it was last checked. Every result is one recorded session by one tester using the same script, not an average — the transcripts are on each app's test page.
