Start with a correction: on message limits, Character.AI is hard to beat. We sent 109 messages in one free session with no paywall. What the paid plans change — c.ai lite ($4.99/month) and c.ai+ ($9.99/month) — is ads and model access, not a message cap.
Alternatives that also let you talk freely:
- Janitor AI — a 60-message free conversation with no paywall. It also recalled 8 of 10 planted facts on the free plan with no wrong guesses, which beats Character.AI's 7–8. Free character creation is detailed: personality, scenario, example dialogs, custom prompts. We haven't finished testing it, so it isn't ranked yet.
- SpicyChat — all our test messages answered on the free plan. The trade-off is a short memory: about 4K tokens, with "Context Limit Reached" appearing within fifteen messages.

Apps like Character.AI with better memory
This is Character.AI's real weakness. In the same chat it recalled 7–8 of 10 facts, and once answered a question about the user's weekends with its own hobbies.

- Candy AI has the highest memory score we've given (9.8): 10 of 10 after 54 hours. It's a different kind of product — one visual companion rather than a library.
- Kindroid (8.5) and Nomi AI (7.6) are both built around long-term memory.

Apps like Character.AI that allow NSFW
Character.AI prohibits adult content in its terms, and accounts identified as under 18 lose open-ended chat. If that's why you're looking:
- SpicyChat is the most direct alternative — character-card roleplay with adult content allowed. It was the only app we tested that puts a real check in front of it: a video selfie or ID through an outside provider. SpicyChat vs Character.AI
- Candy AI and Kindroid both allow it; Candy AI's gate is a checkbox, Kindroid's a birthdate.
- GirlfriendGPT is built around it, but remembered only a first name in our tests.

Apps like Character.AI with deeper characters
Character.AI has a long Definition field and a lorebook, but no appearance builder. If you want more control:
- SpicyChat — card import, lorebook, 5,000-character personality, example dialogues, personas and a model picker.
- Kindroid — Key Memories, example messages and response instructions, set before the first message.
- Candy AI — pick looks directly: ethnicity, age, hair, eyes, body, voice.
What you'd give up
Leaving Character.AI isn't free of trade-offs. It refused none of our 15 harmless prompts, held a correct fact through four rounds of pushback, and kept a configured personality through all five challenges — better than most alternatives. It also lets you export and delete your own data, which several alternatives don't.
And no alternative did better on safety: of the six apps we've sent a message about feeling hopeless, none offered a hotline or support link.
