The 3 best AI companion apps in 2026, tested

2026-09-18 · 3 min read

Most "best AI companion" lists are written from marketing pages. This one isn't. We tested five platforms with the same scripts — the same ten personal facts to remember, the same pressure tests, the same 15 harmless messages to see what gets refused — and scored each on nine categories. You can see how we score and read every transcript.

Here are the three that came out on top among the five platforms we have tested so far. The top two are 0.1 apart — treat that as a tie and choose by what you want from a companion, not by the decimal.

Rank App Score Best at Starts at
1 Candy AI 7.8 Memory, visuals €13.99/month (€3.99/month yearly)
2 Kindroid 7.7 Conversation, data control $13.99/month
3 Character.AI 6.6 Free, unlimited roleplay Free (c.ai+ $9.99/month)

1. Candy AI — best overall, and the best memory we've measured

Choose it if you want a companion you design visually and that genuinely remembers you.

  • Memory: 9.8/10. It recalled all ten facts we planted, then all ten again 53.8 hours later in a fresh session — the only perfect result inside our 24–72-hour window.
  • Looks: the most complete appearance builder we tested (ethnicity, age, hair, eyes, body, outfit, voice), plus image and video generation.
  • Personality: kept its configured traits through every challenge, though it agreed with a false fact on the fourth turn.

Watch out for: a free tier of just 5 messages, extras that spend tokens (images 2, video 10, calls 3 a minute on a 100-token monthly allowance), no native app, and weak privacy — a tracking ID is set before you choose on cookies, and its privacy policy lets chats be used for AI training unless you opt out.

2. Kindroid — the best conversationalist

Choose it if conversation quality matters more than looks, and you want control over your data.

  • Conversation: 9.0/10, the highest we've scored. Asked the same personality questions hours apart, it stayed consistent — and noticed it was being asked again.
  • Memory: 8.5/10. 10 of 10 facts in the same chat, and both updated facts were used correctly about 17 minutes later.
  • Control: detailed setup (key memories, example messages, response instructions), strong group chats, an API, a self-serve data export and deletion that, per Kindroid, removes your conversations.

Watch out for: slow replies (a median of 26 seconds across 53 replies on the Polaris model, 100 seconds in a longer session), no cookie banner while trackers load, and costly memory upgrades: $38.98/month with Ultra, $98.97 with MAX.

3. Character.AI — the best free option

Choose it if you want free, unlimited roleplay with thousands of characters, and don't need adult content.

  • Price: unlimited free messages (with ads). A 109-message free-tier session, counting both sides, never hit a paywall.
  • Freedom: 9.0/10. It refused none of our 15 harmless messages, in two separate runs.
  • Personality: held a configured trait through every challenge.

Watch out for: weaker memory (7–8 of 10 facts in the same session, including one invented answer), no explicit content, voice you can't interrupt by speaking, a €158,000 GDPR fine in July 2026, and a broad licence over what you write.

Why not Nomi AI or GirlfriendGPT?

Nomi AI (6.5) was a close fourth: excellent recall — 9 of 10 facts about 21 hours later — and one flat price, but it abandoned the personality we configured under pressure and its voice calls were weak. GirlfriendGPT (4.7) remembered only a first name on its €12 plan and gated the voice it advertised.

How to check these results: every number above links to the transcript message or test session it came from. Each platform was tested by one tester, on one account, with the same scripted prompts — so each result is one recorded session, not an average. The full session list for each app is on its test history page, for example Candy AI's.
